Second Winter

San Francisco just had its coldest June since 1999, with an average temperature of 57.6 degrees. The cold weather has been mostly annoying. It didn’t affect my mood as much as it just meant I had to bundle up for my daily walk. The most annoying thing isn’t the temperature, it’s the wind. When the sun is out and the breeze stops, it instantly feels 10 degrees warmer.

I often walk down Kirkham, which gives me a view of the ocean. The ocean has been whitecaps for most of the month. I wear a gaiter around my neck and think of how ironic it is to be bundled up like this in the middle of summer.

I’m still glad though to be here. I’ve lived here all my life, and I know that not every year is like this. Most summers are in the mid-sixties and are actually quite pleasant. And I know that if I want a bit of warmth, all I need to do is drive north, east, or south and I can have all the sunshine I want. And then I can return to the city that I love.
