Let’s Get Smol: Miniature Balsa Buildings

I’m always finding new ways to practice art daily, and it helps to find things that I can finish in under 30 minutes. One material that’s easy to cut and paint is balsa wood, so on two different days in September I made this cottage and lighthouse. The houses themselves are balsa with cardstock roofs, and the lighthouse tower started as a golf tee. I stole the lamp housing from an N-scale streetlamp. I like doing little projects like these because they are simple but compelling. If you have a few spare moments, give it a try. All you really need for tools is a hobby knife an a paint brush.

  • Balsa and cardstock
  • Finished house. The chimney is a matchstick
  • Ivy for size
  • A golf tee is the basic of this lighthouse
  • Painting the spiral
  • Finished lighthouse
