Ducks at Safeway

We went shopping at Safeway yesterday for the weekend and saw something unusual. Two mallard ducks, a male and a female sitting on the asphalt on in a parking spot. I had seen this particular pair before a couple weeks ago. So they seem to like it here. I’m not sure why they find it attractive though.

Lots of cars and people. All concrete. At least a mile away from any lake or golf course. It also isn’t a place to raise young.

But I have a theory. This is a perfect place to snooze if you want to stay away from predators. The ducks were sleeping with their eyes closed until we approached to take pictures. I also have personally seen a coyote climbing a nearby hill through the brush on Brotherhood Way.

They must feel pretty comfortable to be sleeping with cars and people so near. Clever ducks, I think.
