Do Not Disturb: Avoiding App Notifications
Have you noticed that every app you install, whether on your Mac or iPad or phone, defaults to sending you notifications so they can steal your attention? Yuck! I hate it!
My simple answer: Do Not Disturb. For my Mac and iPad, I set Do Not Disturb on from 6AM to 10PM, which are the hours when I’m actually using my devices.
For the phone, it’s a bit different. I allow SMS messages on my lock screen, but I’ve turned off lock screen notifications for all other apps. I allow notification dots only. So if someone on social media likes or DMs me, I will only notice when I happen to open my main screen and see the notification dot. I can decide for myself when and if I will offer my attention.
Attention is a valuable thing. I’m learning to give it more mindfully. And as a result, I am less disassociated from myself and the things and people that are truly important to me.
