The Berkeley Rose Garden

I had the opportunity to take a Friday off work and a friend suggested visiting the Berkeley Rose Garden. I had not known about it but I was thoroughly delighted when I got there. When you look at a map, it looks flat and I was imagining something like the rose garden at Golden Gate Park.

But that is totally not the case. The garden was built in the mid-1930s as a WPA project, and it was built on the side of a hill in the shape of an amphitheater. It has semi-circular terraces, where each terrace includes a walkway along which you can enjoy the flowers. Steps lead up and down to the next terrace.

When we arrived, the fragrant smell of the roses was immediately evident. It is one of my favorite fragrances. Spending time there was a delight. I do spend many hours inside in front of a computer screen, so this was a welcome difference and a great way to end the week.
