Perseverance: A Reminder to Keep Making

Politics are terrible right now. No way around it.

But that’s not a reason to stop creating. If anything, it’s a reason to make more.

In my studio, there’s a spirit doll. I made it with my hands using branches, fabric scraps, paper mache. A face that slowly took shape. I named it Perseverance.

It wasn’t easy. It took months. I hesitated. Got stuck. Let it sit unfinished. But eventually, I pushed through.

Now, Perseverance sits in my studio. A reminder. A presence. It tells me to keep going. To keep creating, no matter what.

Art isn’t just something we do. It’s part of who we are. It’s resistance. It’s survival. It’s saying: I’m here. I make things. That matters.

I talked about this process with Tina Hoff on You And I Make A Thing. We made spirit dolls, pushed past doubt, and found meaning in the process. Listen to the episode here: Spirit Dolls with Tina Hoff.

So no matter what’s happening out there, I’ll keep making. You should too.
